Suitable for those without prior aviation training, the Diploma of Aviation course at Learn to Fly is provided in partnership with Australian Pilot Training Alliance (APTA) and is a Part 142 integrated flight training program, meaning that flight training is offered at the highest industry standard.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, you will receive a Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL), a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) and a Commercial Pilot Licence, as well as a diploma certificate. With these certifications in hand, you will be equipped to work as an airline pilot.

This course will be offered in conjunction with Australian Pilot Training Alliance (APTA).

Diploma of Aviation (CPL) Course Process

This is the first step every pilot must undertake in their journey to becoming a professional pilot. In this stage you’ll learn the basics of flight — both in the air and on the ground. Please see the process details in the RPL page.

After successfully gaining your RPL and moving into the PPL stage, you’ll really understand why pre-flight planning is key to any successful flight. Navigation exercises can be challenging for some pilots. Please see the process details in the PPL page.

You are required a total of 150 hours with 70 flown solo as a legal minimum. In order to gain the required 70 hours of Pilot-In-Command time you will be given planned navigation exercises. You will also be given up to 15 hours of your own time where you have the choice to explore the countryside with friends and family.

The CPL training will be separated into 2 parts. First of all, students need to finish seven theory subjects via formal classes and all theory exams must be completed within a two year time frame.

The CPL flight training will consist of 20 hours of VFR cross-country flight time as pilot-in-command, including a cross-country flight totaling at least 540 km (300 NM) in the course of with full-stop landings at two aerodromes different from the aerodromes of departure.

After ongoing instruction and practice, you will be ready to be put forward for your CPL flight test. In a flight test with a CASA approved Testing Officer, you will demonstrate all that you have learnt through your flight training. If they are satisfied with your knowledge and skills, you will be awarded your Commercial Pilot Licence.

There are a number of different career pathways available to pilots with a Diploma of Aviation including those offered at commercial airlines. Students can also use their diploma certificate to apply for bachelor courses in the future and get up to 1 year’s recognition of prior learning (RPL), so in 3 years time, they can get a CPL, diploma and a bachelor.
