Navigate your way to success

Having obtained your RPL, the next stage in your flight training process is learning to navigate. With the assistance and guidance of your instructor, you will plan and execute several navigational flights throughout your PPL training whilst also improving your fundamental flying skills. You also begin to operate larger and more complex aircraft, such as the Piper Warrior or Cessna 172. This program is offered in conjunction with Melbourne Flight Training.

PPL Course Process

Please note it is a prerequisite to hold an Recreational Pilot Certificate RPC or Recreational Pilot Licence RPL for this course.

Theory sessions will cover a range of areas including aircraft balance, flight planning, map reading, navigation, performance and meteorology. Ground theory will be integrated into the flight training. You will need to pass the CASA PPL Theory Exam and practical flight training to obtain your Licence.

You will start your flight training following the PPL syllabus. The training program teaches you how to navigate and get from A to B. With the assistance and guidance of your instructor, you will plan and execute several navigational flights throughout your training.

If your instructor feels you are competent to navigate the aircraft on your own, they will send you on your navigation solo. You will fly cross country, taking off from Moorabbin Airport, navigating around the ranges, controlling steps and flying to a different airport. You will land there, refuel, takeoff and come back to Moorabbin.

After ongoing instruction and practice, you will be ready to be put forward for your PPL flight test. In a flight test with a CASA approved Testing Officer, you will demonstrate all that you have learnt through your flight training. If they are satisfied with your knowledge and skills, you will be awarded your Private Pilot Licence.
